Wednesday 9th March, 6-7 pm, IWD Vigil

UK WILPF will be taking part in a IWD Vigil in unison with seven other organisations (Women in Black, Southall Black Sisters, Newham Asian Women's Project, Amargi of Istanbul, Okinawa Women Act against Military Violence, London Feminist Network, and Women for Women International).

Meet at the Edity Cavall Statue opposite the National Portrait Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London.

Just a note: Women in Black host this weekly vigil on Wednesdays in which they usually wear black but they understand that friends from other groups will be in any colour whatever. However, please respect the practice of being silent and not chatting while the vigil is happening from 6 till 7 pm. If passers-by come up and try to engage in conversation, Women in Black usually politely refer them to whoever is doing the leafletting, and say "we try to remain silent on the vigil but so-and-so would really enjoy to talk to you".

In the context of the International Women's Day, we are pleased to inform you about about two events at BOZAR on 7th March:

A debate on “violence against women” (starting at 18:30 hrs) with representatives from UN Women, civil society and the European Union (TBC). The UN campaign "Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women" will set the basis for a discussion that will focus on issues of particular relevance also in the European context, such as domestic violence issues both from a policy and action-oriented perspectives. Please register for the debate (free entrance) by sending an email with your name to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Following the debate, there is a preview of Die Fremde (“When we leave”) (starting at 20:00 hrs) jointly organized by ABC Distribution, BOZAR CINEMA, the Goethe-Institut Brüssel and CINEMATEK in partnership with UNRIC, UN Women, European Parliament’s LUX Prize, Amazone and Elles Tournent Festival, in the presence of the director Feo Aladag who will participate in an interview with Nicolas Crousse (Le Soir) after the screening.

Difficult social issues related to women’s place in society and violence against women, including domestic violence and so-called “honour killings” motivated director Feo Aladag to make this film. It won several prizes in 2010, including the Lux Prize from the European Parliament, the Grand Prix at the International Film Festival Ghent and Label Europa Cinemas Prize at the Berlin Film Festival.

The tickets for the film can be purchased at a price of EUR 10 at: http://www.bozar.be/activity.php?id=10994&.

Welcome

On behalf of Middle Tennessee State University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program, I cordially invite you to participate in our ninth biennial conference: Global Discourses in Women’s and Gender Studies, March 24 - 26, 2011. Our conference theme reflects our interest in promoting feminist perspectives that foreground the influence of global forces on women’s and/or gendered existence and in examining connections between local/national and global issues that relate to women’s and/or gendered existence. We welcome scholars, activists, non-profit professionals, students, and others who engage issues of social justice, particularly those related to women and gender.

Our keynote speaker is internationally-renowned Cambodian sex slave trade survivor and anti-human trafficking activist Somaly Mam. Mam has dedicated her life to exposing the multi-million dollar global sex trade industry and to campaigning against the trafficking of human beings, particularly the trafficking and sexual exploitation of women and children.  Her work in this area, including the founding of the Somaly Mam Foundation http://www.somaly.org, has led to enormous international recognition. For example, she was featured as a CNN Hero in 2006, named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People of 2009,” and was the recipient of the first “Roland Berger Human Dignity Award.”

We aim to make this conference a very satisfying experience for all participants; consequently, we offer the following:

  • Very reasonable conference costs. (Please see registration information.)

  • Single panel per session conference format. This format worked extremely well at our 2009 conference as it provided the opportunity for larger audiences at sessions, substantive audience engagement with material presented, and sustained exchange of ideas among presenters and conference participants. This format also promotes interaction among conference participants that can contribute to a positive conference experience.

  • Professional development workshop. This workshop is free and open to all registered participants.

  • Film and panel discussion.

We hope you will seriously consider attending the conference. We strive to make our conference a safe and comfortable space for sharing perspectives, ideas, and experiences.

Please feel free to email or call us if you have any questions.
