The Republic of Chad has an estimated population of 11.5 million (UN, 2010). The capital is N'Djamena. Chad has an area of 1.28 millions sq km (495,800 sq miles). The main languages are French, and Arabic.

Chad endured decades of civil war after its independence in 1960. The country experienced internal conflict and a lack of infrastructure. However, Chad seems politically stable under the current regime.

Women remain largely discriminated against in Chad. Although the constitution provides equal rights for all citizens, in practice, there is a big inequality between men and women. Despite the government effort to promote gender equality, women are still underrepresented in government and decision-making positions.

  •   Chad signed the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples'  Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (The Maputo Protocol) on the 6th of December 2004 but has not ratified it.
  • The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) was ratified by Chad on the 9th of June 1995.
  • Chad has not yet adopted a National Action Plan on United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325).
  • Since September 2007, there is a UN peacekeeping mandate in Chad: United Nations Mission in the African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT).
