Fellowships and scholarships is one way of obtaining new skills and experiences all the while enabling to make new contacts and making use of ones knowledge. Make Every Woman Count has compiled a list potential fellowships and scholarships which is continually updated.
American Association of University Women (AAUW)
International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported. Several fellowships are available for study outside of the U.S.
Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP)
The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is an international programme under which member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth countries. The Plan was established at the first Commonwealth education conference in 1959 and is reviewed by education ministers at their triennial meetings – the only scholarship scheme in the world to receive such high-level recognition.
The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)
The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is headquartered in Dakar, Senegal. It was established in 1973 as an independent pan-African research organisation primarily focusing on social sciences research in Africa. CODESRIA’s mission required the emergence of a pan-African community of researchers, the protection of their intellectual freedom and autonomy in performing their duties and the elimination of barriers regarding language, discipline, region, gender and generation.
The Nordic Africa Institute
This scholarship programme is directed at scholars in Africa, engaged in research on the African continent. Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply for these scholarships.
African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD)
African women working in agricultural research and development from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia who have completed a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in selected disciplines are invited to apply.
University of Toronto, Faculty of Law
The Graduate Scholarships in Women's Rights, in varying amounts are open to law graduates from Africa, Central or South America, the Middle East, East or South East Asia who have an interest in human rights of women to undertake advanced research and study in this area of law.
London School of Economics, Margaret Bennett Scholarship
This scholarship is available to support female students from Africa intending to study for the LLM|. Preference will be given to applicants from North Africa.
University of Southampton
This Foundation offers Foundation Grants to help women graduates with their living expenses (not fees) while registered for study or research at an approved institution of higher education in the United Kingdom.
Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future
Faculty for the Future fellowships are awarded to women from developing and emerging economies who are preparing for PhD or post-doctoral study in the physical sciences and related disciplines at top universities for their disciplines abroad.
International Federation of University Women
The fellowships and grants offered by IFUW and its national affiliates support the research, study and training needed to open doors to quality education for women and girls throughout the world.
Georgetown Law
The Leadership and Advocacy for Women in Africa (LAWA) Fellowship Program was founded in 1993 at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., in order to train women's human rights lawyers from Africa who are committed to returning home to their countries in order to advance the status of women and girls in their own countries throughout their careers. Over 50 women's human rights advocates from Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe have participated in the LAWA Program, and we hope to include Fellows from additional countries in the future.
Conflict, Security and Development Group, Kings College London
The Fellowships bring together African women in the early stages of their careers to undertake a carefully designed training programme in conflict, security and development. This training is followed by an attachment to an African Regional Organisation or a Centre of Excellence to acquire practical experience in the field of peace and security. It is intended that this project will train African women to develop a better understanding of African peace and security issues, in order to increase their participation in conflict management processes and other areas of security concerns for Africans.
The African Thesis Award
The award aims to encourage student research and writing on Sub-Saharan Africa and to promote the study of African cultures and societies. It is presented annually to a student whose Masters thesis has been completed on the basis of research conducted on Africa.The award consists of a prize of €1000 for the winning thesis, which will be published in the ASC African Studies Collection. All the theses submitted will be accessible via the ASC library's catalogue and may also be (partially) published on The Broker's website: www.thebrokeronline.eu.
The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships
Ambassadorial Scholarships - Support study abroad at a university in any country in which there is a Rotary Club.
World Peace Scholarships - Provide funding for two-year master's degree or certificate programs in international relations, peace studies and conflict resolution at specific universities.
Herbert Scoville Jr. Peace Fellowships
Provides an opportunity to serve as junior staff members at a participating organization in Washington, DC, Fellows work full-time for six to nine months with nonprofit, public-interest organizations addressing peace and security issues. (Open to international graduates)
Gates Cambridge Scholarships
Support study at Cambridge University for citizens of all countries outside the U. K. Candidates must be accepted to Cambridge.

The Ford Foundation International Fellowships Programme (IFP)
The International Fellowships Programme (IFP) of the Ford Foundation is a programme representing the largest single program ever supported by the Foundation. Through the IFP, Ford is investing over $350 million within a period of 15 years to provide support for up to three years of formal post-baccalaureate study for Fellows from countries in Africa, Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and Russia, where the Foundation maintains active overseas programs. The IFP will support approximately 4,000 Fellows within the period.
Dorothy Marchus Senesh Fellwoship for Women from Developing Countries in Peace and Development Studies
The Dorothy Senesh Fellowship is available to women from developing countries who have completed a Bachelor's degree, who have been accepted into a graduate program and whose graduate work is to be focused on issues related to the goals of IPRA. Funds will only be dispersed when the selected candidate is admitted into a graduate program. Awards are considered based on need; therefore students with substantial funding sources are less likely to be considered for the award.
