This conference will examine the nexus of religion, gender, identity, human rights and politics with a particular focus on Europe in a context of globalisation. It will fill a gap in current literature on religion, politics and society, which tends to ignore or treat as secondary the gendered dimensions of these developments.

Africans and friends of Africa all over the UK will once again come together to take part in our exciting event titled “Ms Africa West Midlands- Celebrating African Women’s achievements.” This event will take place at the prestigious Wulfrun Hall, North Street, Wolverhampton on Saturday, 25th June 2011 as part of the refugee week commemoration.

The event aims to empower, advance and support asylum seeking and refugee women of African ancestry as well as all other African women in the Diaspora. This day of Presentations, Music, Dances, Sport, glamour, song, drama and exotic African cuisine will provide the opportunity for members of the public, local community groups, agencies and refugee community organisations to come together and celebrate and encourage the contribution of refugee women to our society.

The day will begin with a football tournament with four local African football teams playing for a trophy. This will be followed by a talent and fashion show whose rationale is to have its participants and winners actively promote and get involved in advancing the cause of African women. Ultimately, it is the intelligence, talent and courage of these women that takes precedence over everything else. The elected “Ms Africa West Midlands” shall be able to act as a culture ambassador, disseminate knowledge about African women and be a “bridge builder” between African women and other agencies and the wider public. In this capacity, she would liaise with other organizations to raise awareness of the barriers that African women face here in the UK.

The event will be culminated with a celebration of African women’s contribution to the British society. Awards will be presented to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of African women have overcome great cultural and social barriers to become exemplary role models within their communities. The African Women Achievement Award applauds and celebrates professional and personal achievements of not only women who have succeeded in their communities but also women who are taking positive steps like best new student, best volunteer, best mother, best new worker and many more.

The major theme of the conference is democracy that delivers. CIPE believes that the institutions of democracy are key in securing and enforcing the fundamental rights of women and providing them with mechanisms for full economic, political, and civic participation. Women play a fundamentally important role in building democracies that deliver, taking charge in creating prosperous and equal societies. CIPE views this role through the prism of linkages between political and economic empowerment, where civil society organizations – especially women’s business associations – remove barriers and empower women to participate fully in society and shape their own countries.
