It is intended to facilitate use of the African regional human rights system and the African Commission on Human andPeoples' Rights (African Commission) to promote and protect reproductive andsexual health. With this as its main purpose, this manual:
• describes the context of reproductive and sexual health in Africa and theAfrican regional human rights system, • demonstrates how the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights(African Charter) relates to reproductive and sexual health rights, • compiles basic texts such as the African Charter, regional declarations,selected resolutions of the African Commission, and selected national andAfrican Commission case law relevant to reproductive and sexual healthrights or to the African Commission's procedure. International humanrights documents relevant to the interpretation of the African Charter rightsare also included, • explains the purpose and function of the African Commission, and • provides technical information on the submission of communications to theAfrican Commission.
