Source:NGO Working Group on Women Peace and Security (NGOWG) The United Nations Resolution 1820 was adopted by the Security Council fon June, 19 2008. The UNSCR 1820 confronts sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict situations.
The key provisions of the resolution recognize a direct relationship between the widespread and/or systematic use of sexual violence as an instrument of conflict and the maintenance of international peace and security; commit the Security Council to considering appropriate steps to end such atrocities and to punish their perpetrators; and request a report from the Secretary General on situations in which sexual violence is being widely or systematically employed against civilians and on strategies for ending the practice.
