Training goal:
The purpose of the African Women's Leadership Institute (AWLI) is to develop a strong cadre of women leaders at personal and collec)ve levels, to influence policy and decision‐making, through the applica)on of feminist1 principles.
The purpose of this thematic training is to equip participants with up‐to‐date knowledge on sexual and reproduc)ve health and rights (SRHR) and violence against
women (VAW), and skills for advocacy and action on these issues in conflict and post‐conflict African contexts.
Training participants:
African women leaders working in the fields of women's rights/ gender equality from civil society, government, multilateral and
donor agencies. Par)cipant age‐range from 25‐45 years; women leaders that are already involved in work on gender equality and
women's rights (in a range of sectors).
Training length:
The guide is designed for a 14‐day training, which is the standard dura)on for sub‐regional AWLIs.
Learning objec)ves of the guide:
The overall learning objec)ves of the training guide are to:
1. Build a common base of knowledge amongst par)cipants on the core concepts of feminism, gender and women's rights; sexual
and reproductive health and rights, gender‐based violence, and human security.
2. Develop and improve on practical skills for advocacy on the above issues in conflict and post‐conflict contexts. Includes enabling par)cipants
to reflect on exis)ng advocacy and consider new, crea)ve ways to posi)ve transforma)on for women in their countries, based on feminist
leadership and movement building theory and prac)ce.
3. Build a base of knowledge around mainstream conflict, peace and security discourses and frameworks and how to engage them
from a feminist perspective
