The Secretary of Local Education Authority (LEA) in Abaji Area Council, Dr Hassan Suleiman, decries child abuse and hawking, saying two third of school dropouts are girls.

Speaking shortly after he was conferred with an award, Students Ambassador, by the Abaji Student Union (ASU), Tuesday, Suleiman said parents should cooperate with stakeholders in ensuring that every child had access to education.

He said that the LEA and area council would discourage early marriage and child hawking during school hours.

He said that the LEA was working tirelessly to improve girl-child enrolment in schools across the council.

"On the part of the teachers, we have always motivated them by recognising their efforts with assorted prizes and gifts, while the pupils or students are awarded based on their performance," he said.

Also speaking, the President of the ASU, Haruna Adamu, said that the award was in recognition of the LEA secretary's efforts towards improving and encouraging school enrolment in the council.

He said the LEA has also played vital role toward ensuring that the proposed University of Technology in the council comes to reality, saying the union will continue to remain indebted to the secretary.
