Members of a women group in Kitui West subcounty have protested against plans to grab their two-acre plot at Kabati trading centre. The women said land brokers are targeting the land, which they have owned for 25 years.
Chairlperson of the Kauwi Muungano Women Group Mary Syunzau said the court gave them the go ahead to occupy the plot. She said a search at the local land registry revealed that details of the plot are missing.
"There is a powerful clique of individuals who colluded to change the number of our plot to disenfranchise us. The plot number has been changed but we will not let it go," Syunzau said.
She was speaking to the media on Monday when she toured the disputed plot. "The High Court in Machakos in October 2011 recognised us as the owners and not the applicants, who wanted to take our plot," she said.
Syunzau said the group bought the land in the late 1980s at Sh13,500. "It was an astronomical amount that time. At the time other similar plots used to cost a maximum of Sh8,000," she said. Syunzau said the group members will resists at- tempts to grab the land.
