Not fewer than 200 elderly women who suffer from various forms of eye diseases in Kuje were at the weekend given free eye glasses by Women in New Nigeria (WINN) to help them correct their sights.
The women group made the donation to mark the International Women's Day, Glaucoma week as well as World Health Day at Kuje General Hospital.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Muyi Aidogie, said many Africans are currently at risk of contacting glaucoma diseases.
National Chairperson of the group, Dr. Esther T. Mangzha, stated that the group will not only distribute free glasses but also equip the women with leadership skills in order to empower them to change the battered image of the country, by 'eradicating corruption through enlightenment programmes, trainings, rallies, micro-credit schemes, advocacy and networking.'
Mangzha called on women to stand up for their rights by forming associations that would help them become entrepreneurs and owners of businesses, adding that women have sufficient knowledge and experiences to help tackle multi-faceted socio problems in the country.
Kuje area council chairman, who was represented at the occasion by Managing Director of Kuje General Hospital, commended the women group for assisting the less privileged in the area.
He assured that the council and the hospital are ready to partner with the group as well as offer necessary support for similar programmes.
