Seven South Sudanese women who were taken to India for training have completed a six months training on solar engineering.
The seven women were yesterday received by the UN Women Programme Specialist, Coumba Ceesay Marenah and the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Esther Ikere Eluzai at Juba International Airport.
The initiative came from the United Nations Women in partnership the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare.
All the regions of South Sudan were represented in the selection with two from Unity, Eastern Equatoria, Warrap and one from Northern Bahr-el-Ghazal.
According to Coumba, the selection was done by rural women in the respective states and that they brought the initiative because they feel that the potentials are here in South Sudan.
She also reiterated her commitment to supporting the trained women with solar panels so that they can use and enhance their areas. She added that the group that has just completed is the pioneer.
Meanwhile the Undersecretary said that they were very pleased receiving the team after the training adding that they hope that the group will work to reduce the cost of electricity in the villages.
Elizabeth Akuch who is the team leader expressed gratitude and said that they had learnt a lot of things from Barefoot College in India, something which they intend to put into practice for the benefit of South Sudanese people.
