Women in Narok county have urged the government to stop advertisement companies from using women images exposing parts of their bodies on billboards.
They said the advertisements deprives them the right to self-determination and self-worth and urged the government to enact laws to deal with them. Patricia Parsitau, a women's leader in the county, said in addition to the provisions under the new constitution, more policies must be introduced to protect women's rights.
Parsitau made the remarks at the weekend during Nadumu Ntomonok dissemination forum on women's political charter, Narok county at the EMF Social Hall at the Ewaso Nyiro trading centre in Narok South district.
More than 300 women attended. "Any practice that hinders or endangers the normal growth and affects the physical and psychological development of women and girls should be condemned and eliminated," said Parsitau.
Parsitau, who is a front-runner for the women representative seat in the county, called on women in the country to unite and make women rights and equality a reality through campaigns. "To realise our vision as women, the government must adopt and implement appropriate legislative policies that recognise and protect women personality and personal identity," she said.
She said that county has its uniqueness in women oppression citing some rituals that objectify women to the point where a woman is viewed as a trophy or a piece of property to be bought and sold at will.
Ms Daisy Amdany of CRAWN Trust said that despite the progressive and women provisions contained in the 2012 Kenyan Constitution, women in the country continue to be victims of discrimination, sexual and gender based violence and hamful social violence practices.
