The European External Action Service (EEAS) is creating more visibility and support for women's involvement in peace and security by organizing two events that focus on sharing knowledge, expertise and best practices relevant to gender and human rights issues in peace negotiations and mediation and in the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions.
EU's comprehensive approach to the implementation of UNSCR 1325 on women, peace and security
On Thursday the 14th of June the EU Member State Annual Meeting on UN Security Council Resolution 1325 will bring together experts who are directly in charge of UNSCR 1325 implementation in their respective countries, European institution staff, and representatives from civil society and non-EU invitees (UN, OSCE, NATO). The participants will get a chance to exchange views and experiences on national implementation of UNSCR 1325 and 1820, and more particularly on their experiences relating to women’s involvement in peace negotiations and mediation.
There are currently 13 EU Member States that have successfully implemented their UNSCR 1325 National Action Plans, and other Member States will present their in a near future. The meeting will give a valuable opportunity to share knowledge and experiences with EU Member States in the process of considering or elaborating a National Action Plan.
EU makes consequent efforts to implement relevant UN resolutions in all aspects of its policies and has a clear commitment to promote the representation of women in early stages of mediation processes. This year, the meeting will particularly focus on giving concrete examples on how the EU, with different tools, has contributed to increasing the participation of women in peace negotiations and mediation.
One of the panels will focus on field cooperation the Caucasus region, where EU actors are contributing to building peace through women’s organisations. In the meeting it will also be discussed what role the UN and Civil society play in changing the engagement of women in conflict countries, and bringing them to the peace negotiation table.
Good practises on human rights and gender policies in Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions
The 15th of June meeting brings together Gender and Human Rights Advisors in Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions and operations to share their experiences, successes, and challenges encountered within their respective organizations and posts. By providing a platform the EEAS aims at strengthening the gender and human rights advisors' network and their interaction with other relevant EEAS actors.
The EEAS wants to contribute to these important issues by arranging the two meetings and providing space for sharing ideas and creating improvements for the future work.
