The North Bank Regional Gender Action Team (GAT) recently held series of sensitisation meetings in cluster villages of Ngain Sanjal, Kataba, Illiassa, Dasilami, Prince and Pakau Njogu.

 

The purpose of the sensitisation campaign was to create more awareness on gender concept and advocate for women's participation in all decision-making processes to bring about sustainable development.

Speaking at the various sites, Ebrima Jammeh, a staff of the Department of Community Development said the campaign would help communities to support in mainstreaming gender issues in all development programmes and projects at community level, to ensure equality and empowerment of all.

"Therefore, there is a need to incorporate gender awareness, women's participation and women's issues into development programmes with goal of overcoming gender equality," he remarked. According to him, the attainment of MDG 3 and poverty reduction can only be achieved through increased participation of women in decision-making processes.

For her part, Kaddy Bojang-Saidy, chairperson of GAT commended the beneficiaries for their support and understanding during the campaign. She noted that such initiatives are aimed at building good relationship between men and women in society. She also stated that the community outreach campaign is aimed at ensuring that women continue to partake in all key decision-making processes for the attainment of sustainable development and peace.

Madam Bojang-Saidy applauded the government of The Gambia under the dynamic leadership of President Jammeh for the giant steps taken in recognising gender equality and women empowerment as a key factor for the attainment of socio-economic development.

She appealed to women to support one another to ensure that they are fully represented in all decision-making processes to bring about sustainable development and peace. The GAT chairperson finally thanked Concern Universal for providing funds with the assistance of the Non-State Actors Fund.
