The Zanzibar Revolutionary Government is reviewing all outdated laws inhibiting the fight against gender-based violence (GBV), the House of Representatives was informed here yesterday.
The Minister responsible for Children and Women Affairs, Ms Maudline Cyrus Castico, said outmoded laws lead to questionable dismissals of cases in courts. "We have not conducted a thorough research on the level of abuse since the launch of Anti-GBV campaign in December 2014.
But statistics from various departments show that the problem still prevails," she said. She was responding to representative Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who wanted to know whether the anti-GBV campaign launched in 2014 by President Ali Mohamed Shein had success.
She said that although there have been achievements in raising public awareness, problems in handling GBV cases are delayed or dismissed by courts to the disappointment of the victims. She said a total of 209 cases were filed in courts.
