Gambians both at home and abroad have taken to social media to condemn the apparent arrest of Aminata Manneh, a female gender activist for posting a controversial image on her Facebook page.

The young activist who is a student at the University of The Gambia(UTG), and currently holding an internship at the American Corner of the US Embassy in Banjul, has not been seen since her arrest last week.

According to reports posted on social media on Sunday, Miss Manneh was arrested by operatives of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) over a video she shared on social media, which showed a police officer brutalizing a school girl.

Manneh was on her way to work when she saw a police officer beating a school girl with a long chain.

She decided to film the disturbing episode and shared it on social media questioning the duty of the country's security personnel.

The video became viral "within a short time" online Gambian sources reported Saturday.

Meanwhile calls for her release have intensified with many Gambians describing her detention as a 'cruel violation' of her basic rights as a Gambian citizen concerned about an undeniable case of police abuse of a young defenseless schoolgirl.

The Gambian police have not commented on the circumstances surrounding Ms. Manneh's arrest.
