A bike rally was organised in the city on Sunday to spread awareness about gender-biased sex selection. The rally saw participation of 75 male bikers and 25 female bikers and was flagged off from Qutub Institutional Area and made its way via Punjabi Bagh to Rothak.

The rally was a part of the initiative called 'Mission Hazaar' being undertaken by an organisation called Breakthrough that works against gender-biased sex selection.

Skewed child sex ratio

A large gathering joined the bikers at Chotu Ram Stadium in Rothak to raise their voices against the skewed child sex ratio in Haryana.

Sonali Khan, vice-president and country director, India of Breakthrough, said that while working in Haryana, they realised that the evident absence of women and girls is an unspoken but an accepted reality. They wanted to raise awareness about this absence, which is the root cause of several ills, including increasing forms of violence against women.

In the public eye

"Mission Hazaar aims to put the issue of missing girls in the public eye and introspect about how repeated discrimination against the girl child has led to the disappearance of women from communities," she added.

Women who have broken gender stereotypes were honoured at the function and they shared their life stories and experiences with those present at the event.
