Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu has called on government to establish forensic services department in institutions of learning to provide the police with analytical service for investigating sexual offences and solving other crimes.
He made the call in Abuja during the launch of the Guidelines on Gender Based Violence among young Persons in Nigeria organised by the president, Women Arise for Change Initiative, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin.
Odinkalu decried the rising cases of violence against children particularly in the North-east where they are used as suicide bombers.
He said that forensic service department is applicable in all developed countries and makes crime rate low there.
Minister of Police Affairs, Alhaji Abduljelili Adesiyan said it is important for elections to be conducted under a fair and peaceful atmosphere, adding that any aggrieved person should go to court or the tribunal instead of making the country ungovernable or forming a parallel and illegal government.
Cross River State Governor Senator Liyel Imoke said there is need to implement policies and laws on the extreme violence perpetrated against women rather than creating awareness alone.
President, Women Arise for Change Initiative Dr. Okei-Odumakin said the jungle justice against women and youth should not continue thus the need to disseminate and sign the stop youth violence campaign.
Also speaking, Prof. Friday Okonofua of Ford Foundation said the 2008 national survey indices placed Nigeria at 69 per cent making her the number one country with atrocious violence against women.
