Dozens of Moroccan women protested in front of parliament in Rabat on Tuesday, demanding protection from violence and harassment, as well as legal protection for their dignity.

The demonstration organised by the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (the largest human rights association in Morocco) was held on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Protestors chanted slogans calling on the Moroccan authorities to swiftly pass a law to combat violence against women and to provide them with protection from sexual harassment and violence. The protestors also called for societal integration equal to that of Moroccan men.

The Moroccan government has expressed on several occasions its intention to proceed with the implementation of a bill launched in May 2013 tackling the issue of gender inequality. The bill is expected to be implemented in 2016.

The law intends to combat a number of issues in Moroccan civil society including violence against women, sexual harassment and unequal access to education, as well as underage marriage.
