Police in the eastern district of Iganga recently arrested a 40-year old father who allegedly married off his eight-year-old daughter to her 32-year-old primary teacher for Shs 300,000 and a rooster.

Busoga Regional Police Spokesman Samson Lubega said the father, Peter Baliraine, a resident of Izimba village in Nakigo sub-county was arrested on a tip-off from residents.

"The father of the girl has been arrested after a tip-off by the concerned residents who reported the matter to police upon learning about the incident," Lubega said.

"We later went and recovered the child (girl/victim) from the teacher's home but a medical examination has shown that her private parts were ruptured and she was discharging big volumes of pus," Lubega said, adding that police are still hunting for the teacher.

Lubega said police also arrested the Izimba LC I chairman, Lazaro Kako and his defence secretary Steven Waiswa who allegedly witnessed the illegal marriage.
