Abuja – Sen. Florence Ita-Giwa has decried the rising cases of violence against women in Nigeria, saying it greatly violated their rights as human being and as citizens of the country.
Ita-Giwa, representing Cross Rivers, expressed her displeasure at plenary at the National Conference in Abuja on Thursday.
She that with the increasing violation of women's rights, it was high time the issue was addressed to protect them from the traumatic experiences they went through each day.
"Violence against women either physical or verbal must stop,'' she said.
The delegate further said that women should be given the opportunity to participate actively in governance.
She advocated that women should not only be given opportunity to be part of decision-making, but also co-opted at young age so that they could make meaningful contributions.
"Women must be given the opportunity to participate in the development of this country.
"Women's gestation period should not be so long because in this country before you can have a voice to speak you will be approaching 60 years.
