Police in Bomet are holding two women over female genital mutilation on four girls. The two women aged 60 and 56 were arrested yesterday by police after a tip off by residents. They allegedly carried out the rite at Kapsimotwo village in Bomet Central.
Chief Reuben Ngetich said the two were arrested at midnight shortly after they administered their duties. He said they were found with tools believed to have been used during the illegal cut.
Ngetich who led the operation said police have mounted a search for the four girls who were taken into hiding "Though we managed to arrest the perpetrators, the four girls aged between eight and 12 years escaped," he said. Ngetich said though FGM has been banned, it is practiced secretly to avoid arrest.
He said, though no rescues of underage girls have been rescued from the illegal cut, they believe the acts is going on secretly. He said the Kapsimotwo incident was a testimony that the illegal cut was still active in the region but decried the conservative culture of the locals for their failure by authorities to save the underage girls from the cut. "As you might be aware the communities here are so secretive that they cannot let the authorities know of any planned circumcision of girls," said the chief. The administrator further called on the public and the department of children's services in the area to keep vigil to ensure such cases are prevented and offenders arrested. He said laxity in the department had made it possible for the activity to take a center stage in the region and the culprits to practice impunity.
