A summary of the effects of the Violence by police as at January 10 states that 163 people have been killed in Tana River since August last year when violence started. The report says 571 houses were also set ablaze in the eight attacksin the area.

The statistics were prepared by investigators sent to probe the violence. The report has been forwarded to Police Inspector General David Kimaiyo.

Yesterday, sources said the Tana Delta clashes will be one of the agenda to be discussed by the National Security council in a meeting of the top security machine in the country this month.

Police have linked former Garsen MP Danson Mungatana and retired diplomat Hussein Dado to the violence. The officers said  the violence was meant to scare away members of the Pokomo community from areas perceived to be political  strongholds of rival communities of Orma and Wardei.

CID director Francis Muhoro Ndegwa  who appeared before the commission appointed to investigate the Tana killings police are investigating another suspect identified as Ali Wario and have charged Abbas Hussein, a security manager at the Kenya Ports Authority and Asha Murua over the Tana Delta clashes.

Muhoro said CID had established that the number of Wardei and Orma communities who registered as voters in Tana Delta was about 18,000 out of the 320,000 registered voters.

"It is an attempt to push out some people from the area," Ndegwa told the commission. Muhoro said the CID has investigated the politicians but do not have enough evidence to connect them to the violence.
