The Deputy Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Ms Angela Kairuki, launched the Gender Equality and Women Empowerment programme (GEWE II).
The programme, under the auspices of the Tanzania Media Women's Association (TAMWA), is aimed at educating the society and journalists across the country on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), so as to build awareness and enable combating of different forms of GBV. "Educating the public will facilitate different changes in our society especially in eradicating gender-based violence," said Ms Kairuki.
The Executive Member of Zanzibar Lawyers Association (ZAFELA), Shawana Soud Khamis, said the programme will make women know their rights and protect themselves against violence. "The government should support the project because it will combat different forms of gender violence affecting women and children in the society," she said.
The Executive Director of the Tanzania Media Women Association (TAMWA), Ms Valeria Msoka, said the two-year programme will benefit ten districts in the country. The districts are Wete, North Unguja, Kisarawe, Newala, Mvomero, Lindi Rural, Ruhangwa, Ilala and Kinondoni.
