Oyo State government is set sponsor a bill before the state House of Assembly on prevention of women and children against violence, Governor Abiola Ajimobi has disclosed.
The governor spoke at the opening of the Oyo State Officials' Wives Association (OYSOWA) two-day national summit held at Kakanfo Inn, Ibadan yesterday, saying the bill had become imperative as a legal instrument to guide and guard against unwarranted violence against women, children and other vulnerable persons.
Although the governor said there had been no rampant cases of violence against women and children in the state, he said the bill would serve as a pro-active measure against such unwholesome practices, expressing regret that the African tradition saw women as weaker vessels and object of use.
In her address, wife of the governor Mrs. Florence Ajimobi said OYSOWA was created to synergise the efforts of wives of all political and public office holders in the state in order to complement the activities of their husbands and to advance the course of the womenfolk in the state.
