A member of parliament has accused the government for mishandling women suspects at Mbuguni Police Station in Arumeru East, Arusha, Region.
Special Seats legislator, Rebecca Mngodo (Chadema), said that for over ten years now the said Police Station has been operating without female police officers a situation that has forced male officers handle female suspects and in the process, infringing their rights.
She also said that female suspects are confined in same detention rooms as their male counterparts because of lack of female cells at the station. Ms Mngodo wanted to know when a cell for female suspects would be constructed and female police officers deployed at the station.
Responding, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, Perreira Ame Silima, said it was true that the Mbuguni Police Station was going without female police officers a situation that was caused by shortage of staff. However, he said all matters related to handling female suspects are being handled by female police officers from other stations.
He also refuted claims that the suspects are being mixed, saying the station has two cells for male and female suspects.
