Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women Affairs Mounia Meslem Si Amer, highlighted Tuesday in New York efforts made by Algeria for the promotion of women's rights at all levels of society, the ministry said Wednesday in a statement.

Speaking at a high-level debate held by the Security Council of the United Nations (UN) on "Women, Peace and Security", chaired by Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, the Minister stressed "the efforts made by Algeria, under the auspices of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika for the promotion of women's rights at all levels of society and in all fields, particularly in the participation in public and political life and the process of decision making."

The minister also stressed "the urgent need to redouble efforts to fight against terrorism and violent extremism phenomena as they are linked to sexual violence in conflict," said the same source.

Meslem, in this context, called for "supporting the initiatives of dialogue and promoting tolerance in the fight against violent extremism, in light of the International Conference on de-radicalization held in Algiers in July 2015."

The minister called for ensuring gender equality and the full and effective participation of women in conflict resolution and peace processes.

This high-level debate was devoted to the commemoration of the 15th anniversary of resolution 1325 of the Security Council and discussed the progress and results of its application, as well as current and future challenges in the fight against sexual violence against women and girls during armed conflict.
