The Government of Liberia has backed Liberian women's quest to have access to information in the country.
Information Minister Lewis G. Brown said the essence of women having freedom of access to information provides an opportunity for them to have equal participation in issues of national concern. Minister Brown spoke over the weekend at the Monrovia City Hall.
He told participants that if Liberia must be seen as a State of transformation, women should be involved in every decision making process because they can also play a vital role in decisions that govern the State.
"It is time that we put aside our differences and do things that will bring peace and unity to this country; we must not allow women to always be in the back; they are people that can be trusted for the fact that Liberia has produced the first female President, it means that we must include them in our daily activities and give them the necessary support they need in terms of their working ability", the Information Minister said.
Minister Brown: "By adding value to our citizenship is better than criticizing it because the perception that many of us have in the public is that women don't deserve to have freedom of access to any information or sit in any public office which is a bad precedent for us as a country."
He as a country from war, Liberians should not judge one another on the basis of tribes, religion and gender, stressing, Let us remember that this country belong to every Liberian and not just a single individual; every one must enjoy the fruit of this land."
He pointed out that many Liberian women have been left behind so government is committed to empowering women by allowing them to have equal access to information and justice.
"We have a duty and that is to give them the platform by creating skill training programs that will empower some of them who are not educated, because there will be no argument about women leaving in the back when we discuss politics in this country. He said in as much as men are empowered, there should be measures put in place to empower women too," because we all are citizens of this great land."
