UK Department for International Development (DFID) has approved 2 million Great Britain Pounds to promote and protect women’s rights.

The funding is part of a 4-year DFID human rights programme and is offered to the Legal Services Facility (LSF) for the implementation of various related initiatives.

According to a press statement issued by LSF in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the DFID support will be used to establish and improve women’s legal education and legal aid services across Tanzania.

“DFID has agreed to partner with the LSF to make this programme a success,” LSF Fund Manager, Kees Groenendijk said in the statement.

“We are extremely pleased with the support from DIFD, as this opens new opportunities and allows for positive development following the initial DANIDA contribution. We can now further extend and improve legal aid in Tanzania, focusing on vulnerable groups,” he explained.

Grants to enhance legal aid are now available in 105 districts on both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. The additional DFID contribution will enable the LSF to extend legal aid services to a further 40 districts, covering all the districts of Tanzania.

The Government of Denmark (DANIDA) funded the LSF over the past 18 months through the Tanzania Governance Support Programme.

LSF is a funding instrument set up one year ago, by the government of Denmark, in collaboration with Tanzanian government, with a key objective of providing financial support to legal aid organizations operating in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
