The imam of the Brikama Nema Pipeline Mosque has expressed concern over the manner girls dress in the country, saying it does not conform to any religious teaching.
Imam Tamba Kanyi, who was speaking during a sermon last Friday, decried the 'unreligious' acts of both boys and girls. He said girls wearing tight trousers and loosing them beyond their waists is due to the lackadaisical attitude of many parents, who seem to be ignoring their children and failing to give them good upbringing.
Some residents of Brikama also commented on the issue. "We have just seen the pain and discrimination some young girls are going through in our schools," a man who also attended the Friday prayers at the Nema Pipeline Mosque told this reporter shortly after the prayers.
Such incidents, he said, are caused by the way the girls dress. He further stated that many young girls are now getting into trouble because they are abandoning modest dressing. "Parents must take their responsible roles and teach their children, particularly girl child, the modest way of life," he said, and added: "Our girls must be taught to respect and value their bodies, feelings and every part of them'.'
