Former Head of State, Retired General Yakubu Gowon in collaboration with the TY Danjuma Foundation have donated 800 pairs of school sandals for distribution to female pupils to encourage more female children to go to school.
The sandals were presented to pupils in four schools in Mikang Local Government Area of Plateau State as part of advocacy on girl child education under the Yakubu Gowon Foundation, T. Y. Danjuma Foundation and Mikang Local Government Council partnership on Girl Child Life Education and Development. Chairman of Mikang Local Government Area, Isa Nilot Kongwai, who was at the occasion described the gesture as a unique initiative aimed at creating awareness on the challenges of girl child education and bridging the gap in learning between the genders within the local government area.
He charged all stakeholders in the area to work hard towards higher enrolment and retention of girls in schools while assuring the foundations of the council's commitment to the project.
Earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of the Yakubu Gowon Foundation, Mr Dan Tenshak, while presenting the school sandals, called on the Community Learning Center Management Committee selected from the four districts of the council to ensure fairness in the selection of trainees under the project and maintain the enthusiasm of the benefiting communities in the project. He said the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the project between the foundation and the local government is expected to be signed soon.
