Parliament. Women activists have called on Parliament to expedite the process of passing some of the key pending gender legislations into law to address inequalities and domestic violence inflicted on women.
The activists said the Marriage and Divorce Bill and the Sexual Offences Bill, among others, have remained pending for a long time and must be passed into law.
“We call upon government and Parliament to pass all the pending Bills that aim at addressing violence against women and discrimination against women,” said Action for Development Executive Director Regina Bafaki on Friday at the celebration of NGO’s 26 years in existance.
Addressing the media ahead of the 16 Days of Activism campaign against gender-based violence, the women expressed concern over increasing violence against women in Uganda, noting that such acts violate human rights, peaceful existence in homes, communities and in the nation.
The Eighth Parliament left behind 22 Bills pending. Women MPs recently pledged to work towards passing the Divorce Bill since Speaker Rebecca Kadaga is committed to the same cause.
