Source: Spy Ghana The Second Lady of Republic of Ghana Her Excellency Mrs. Matilda Amissah – Arthur has admonished the youth to abstain from pre-marital sex in order to avoid unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
This she said, they should rather concentrate on their studies and also aspired to be prominent personalities in order to help contribute to the economic growth of the country. Mrs. Matilda Amissah gave the advice during the 2014 Annual National Girls' Camp, which held in collaboration with ActionAid Ghana and Girls' Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service. She also stated that there is no discipline in the country.
This she said, in-discriminatory dumping of littering of the public is a clear example lack of indiscipline in the country. She therefore called on the youth to develop positive characters towards sanitation in the country since they are the future leaders of the country.
She also commended ActionAid Ghana for the tremendous work they are doing in the country. In his speech, the Country Director of ActionAid- Ghana Mr. Sumaila Abdul – Rahman , noted that ActionAid research found out that, there are numerous traditional and customary impediments in the educational journey of young girls in rural communities.
Apart from the general apathy of some parents towards girls' education in favour of boys, there are not many female role models to shape the dreams of this young girls. According to him, it is in this regard, ActionAid -Ghana introduced the Girls' Camp in 2001, as a mentoring programme to help build their confidence and also harness their full potentials in order to fulfill their dreams and aspirations.
This year's Camp which on the theme: "Aspire to inspire : Empowering girls for community development" brings together 160 girls' from deprived communities from 6 regions in the country. This he said, the girls will learn about inspirational career stories from Pilots, Bankers, Journalists, Business Entrepreneurs, Police Officers and others. However,the participants were therefore advised to be a role models and ambassadors to other girls in their various communities after the training.
