Source: Coast Week Top African and international musicians will perform in Nairobi in October at Plan International girls' rights concert in support of the African girl's education, the charity organization said on Friday.
The "Because I am a Girl" concert will bring together South African-born Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Zimbabwe's Oliver Mutukudzi, and Kenya's Suzanna Owiyo.
"They will perform at the concert in October to raise awareness for girls' education in Africa.
The trio will be backed by international artists Ines Basombrio from Argentina, and Eddie Grey from Kenya and Wanayran Angerer, who is from Honduras and also the regional director of the Plan International.
They were also unveiled as Plan International Goodwill Ambassadors.
"The initiative is meant to address gender discrimination around the world by focusing on the inequalities of poverty, violence and discrimination that deny one in five girls an education.
"Not only is this unjust, it's also a huge waste of potential with serious global consequences," said Angerer
The regional manager said every day, girls in Africa, including Kenya, are taken out of school, married far too young, and subjected to violence in school.
He said despite progress made in primary school enrolment over the past decade the likelihood of achieving primary education in Africa by 2015 looks increasingly remote as many more girls remain out of school.
"One might wonder where these girls are!
"One in seven is married by the age of 15. Up to half of all girls in developing countries are mothers before they turn 18. If the current trends continue, more than one million girls will probably be married as children in the next decade," Angerer said.
