Hajiya Asma'u Yari, the wife of Zamfara Governor, has called on parents in the state to enrol their female children in school to ensure a bright future for them.
Yari, who made the call in Gusau on Thursday during an interview with journalists, noted that there was a low enrolment of girls in schools, especially in the rural areas of the state.
She said that it was regrettable that in spite of the efforts of the state government toward promoting female education, many parents were still reluctant to take their children to school.
Yari said the trend must stop.
"As part of our initiatives to empower women of this state, we have embarked on awareness campaigns for parents and stakeholders in girl-child education," she said.
Yari said that the government had also embarked on the training of "women in various trades for them to be self-reliant because it is only when you are educated that you will be empowered.
"I personally have special focus on girl-child education and I know the importance of girl- child education because I am a product of girl-child education.
"All these efforts we are making are in line with our Forum of Northern Governor's Wives because girl-child education is one of the areas we give priority and attention."
Yari further said that with the efforts "we hope by 2020 we will have more women as government potential workers, more women in decision making and more women in various political offices.
