The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), FCT chapter, over the weekend, took tree planting campaign to Bwari Area Council, where residents were sensitised on the importance of tree planting.
Speaking during the exercise, APWEN FCT chapter chairperson, Engineer Nwosah Gladys, said that one way of saving our environment is by consistently planting trees, adding that APWEN had in the past took tree planting campaign to Orozo.
She said, "APWEN has taken positive step to protect the environment by embarking on the APWEN Greening the World project in which trees are planted on yearly basis in some selected communities. We also network with bodies with similar objectives all over the world, to achieve this common goal.
"We gave women in Orozo trees to plant while we monitor its growth monthly. After a year, those that were able to maintain the tree to growth were given prizes. At the end of which prizes totaling N100,000 was shared to those that emerged 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively chosen for our tree planting project."
She said that avocado pear trees have been chosen for the Bwari residents because of its economic value and the enormous amount of shade it will provide when fully grown.
