Concern Universal Thursday held a three-day training workshop for the West Coast Region Gender Action Team, a sub-committee of the Technical Advisory Committee, at the Governor's office in Brikama.
The training, which was funded by the government of Australia, was coordinated by the Women's Bureau.
Speaking at the workshop, Lamin Saho, project manager and micro-enterprise development specialist at Concern Universal, said that the training was meant to equip participants with knowledge on gender-related policies among others to enable them to disseminate the knowledge gained.
In his presentation, Sheikh Omar Faye, the head of Gender and Development Department at the Management Development Institute (MDI), said the Government of The Gambia recognises gender equality and women empowerment as a key factor for the attainment of social and economic development. According to him, the Gender Policy provides a legitimate point of reference for addressing gender inequalities at all levels of government and by all stakeholders.
The overall goal of the policy, he noted, is to mainstream gender in all national and sectoral policies, programmes, plans and budgets to achieve gender equality and women empowerment in the development process.
For her part, Sarjo Camara Jarju of the Department of Community Development, said that the objectives of the Women's Act 2010 is to implement the legal provisions of the National Policy for the Advancement of Gambian Women and Girls, incorporate and enforce the UN
