The Liberian Education Trust-Monrovia (LET) has received a US$75,000 scholarship grant to support 500 girls in schools and build staff capacity, among others.
Speaking at LET office in Airfield, Sinkor during signing ceremony Tuesday, October 6, 2012, LET Board of Directors Chairperson Ms. Maureen Shaw said girls’ education is important because it breaks the sector of poverty in a family or the society as whole.
Ms Shaw said “they care for the younger ones like the mother… if she doesn’t even have the education; she struggles for the survival of the family.”
She stressed that it becomes more of a problem if a girl is not educated because it falls on women in Africa unlike the western culture, that “a girl child coming home from school … takes care of the younger ones.”
Ms Shaw further said when a girl is educated, she helps the younger ones out in their lessons and whatever educational needs and then gradually more and more people become educated.
She however recalled that last year, LET had about 1000 girls in school, unlike this year when unfortunately, they were only able to raise funds for 500 girls so far.
But she disclosed that from “now to November 15, 2012, we will be asking people to donate.” Shaw revealed plans that the institution intends to establish in several counties and to increase the number of girls in school.
She however thanked President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for the establishment of the institution, international donors and partners, among others for their immense contribution and assistance to the upkeep of LET.
Ms Shaw said funding for LET has been coming from international partners and others, saying “What we are doing is so important that is why we don’t mind giving our time.”
In separate responses, local implementing partners thanked the executive of LET and promised to provide a timely and efficient report. Consolidated Youth for Peace and Development (COYPED) representative James Karyor assured the group will be more efficient in terms of reporting on time.
As for her part, Grace Scotland, Executive Director of WE4SELF- expressed appreciation to LET, reporting that “Even the schools that we are dealing with trust and respect us because we are backed by LET. She asked the executives that they would be present during fund rising, to get contributions from their well-wishers.
