NEW Partnership Africa's Development (NEPAD) Director of Programme Implementation and Coordination Estherine Fotabong has noted that only smart policies and economics will put women farmers at the centre of Africa's development.

Addressing journalists during a teleconference recently, Ms Fotabong said in order for Africa to achieve its full potential in agriculture and development, women need to be supported, encouraged and empowered through favourable policies, programmes and various mechanisms.

She said small holder farmers' numbers show that at least 60 per cent of them are women and 60 to 80 per cent of the food in Africa is produced by women.

"The African heads of state are appreciative of NEPAD's work in the area of climate change and women in agriculture," Ms Fotabong has said.
She said there was also need for African states to break the cultural norms that have inhibited women farmers from participating effectively in agriculture.

She said as Africa celebrates the year of 'women's development and empowerment' there should be inclusiveness among men or women working together and supporting one another in moving the communities forward.

Ms Fatobong has implored traditional leaders in member states to empower women farmers with land to contribute to poverty reduction and food security.

She said "in 2015 NEPAD will continue to support the creation of these platforms for women to voice their concerns and provide input in decisions that affect them."
