Kenya 's Deputy President's wife Rachel Ruto on Thursday called for more efforts to economically empower women in the East African nation.
Speaking during the opening of a two-day women conference in Nyeri, central Kenya, Ruto said it is a proven fact that any nation that desires true progress must invest in women saying issues of Women empowerment, food and water, health and education are the foundations on which a family and a nation is build.
Studies show that gender equality and women's empowerment are critical to the achievement of all development goals.
Saying that poverty is still one of the greatest impediments towards women's economic empowerment in the country, Ruto appealed to Kenyan women to take advantage of the existing financial services offered by both public and private financial institutions to uplift their socio-economic status.
The conference's theme was strengthening productivity and market linkages for women poultry farmers.
The seminar for small scale women poultry farmers drawn from across the country was organized by Joyful Women Organization (JOYWO) in collaboration with UN Women and Social Impact Institute.
Ruto said it is only through investments in farming and other income generating activities that the lives of women and youth can be transformed.
