Pathways Togo has been empowering girls through workshops, mentoring and scholarships for school and University since its inception in 2001. Working through a grassroots network of family, friends, community, and faith organizations, Pathways Togo has supported Togolese girls in pursuing their dream of an education. 2011 has been a great inaugural year for the organisation, which was able to provide scholarships to 44 talented and deserving girls and women.

 

Young women and girls are frequently forced to drop out of school to work in the home, on the farm, or in the local market. Yet as Make Every Woman Count frequently argues, educating girls and young women is the surest way to improve life for the whole of society in developing countries. Young women from poor and isolated backgrounds in Togo are achieving what was once only a distant dream, studying languages, humanities, law and sciences at universities in Kara and Lomé. Others are able to stay in school and complete their studies in circumstances where, without support, they would have been forced to abandon them. Many have overcome huge obstacles, from poverty and child labour to forced marriages and separation from their families. 

 

Pathways Togo scholarships and the work of volunteers and beneficiaries are helping to remove such barriers to education. By creating real opportunity for individuals and those around them, this work is ultimately supporting the growing equality and dismantling of poverty in the country. Furthermore, the one-on-one mentoring and annual conferences Pathways Togo provides are increasing the impact of its scholarships. Recipients are given specialized training in confidence building and skills that empowers them to make the most of their education and continue to receive support and guidance from within their own communities.

Challenges remain in building a broad and sustainable network of international support, awareness and funding for their scholarships and mentoring programmes. But having made great progress in the past year, Pathways Togo is hoping to build more and more support for its critical work.
