The Source: Violence Is Not Our Culture
The crackdown on Nuba Women Human Rights Activists in Sudan is escalating. Khadija, Awatif, and Amira are all former or current detainees who have faced extreme psychological and physical torture on the hands of the Sudanese security forces!
On February 6, 2013, Khadija was transferred to Khartoum General Hospital. Her health has severely deteriorated as a result of torture by Sudanese security in detention; two of her chest bones were broken in the course of this torture. On December 27, 2012 more than 65 female detainees in Kadugli began a hunger strike inside the Kadugli military base, protesting their torture and ill-treatment and denial of access to family and lawyers, in addition to the extended term of their already arbitrary arrest. In early January 2013, security transferred these 65 women, among them Khadija Mohamed, to Al Obied women’s prison, where inhuman detention conditions continued, in addition to torture and lack of access to families, lawyers or medical care.
Arry organization was informed by a relative of Khadija that she is now in Khartoum in very poor health, her family are still not allowed to see her . Arry organization is deeply concerned about Khadija Mohamed life and well-being and call on the Sudanese government to immediately and unconditionally release her or present charges against her and all other detainees. We also call on the Sudanese government and authorities to insure Khadija proper medical care and allow her access to her family, legal representatives, and doctors to treat her serious condition.

On January 14th, 2012 , the Sudanese security detained Awatif Awad , a Women human rights defender, working on women and youth rights. Awatif was released on January 17, after she was psychologically and physically tortured, she was sexually harassed and verbally abused in detention. After her release the security forces forced her to report daily to the political division office. when she missed a day they raided her house in search of her and also threatened her family. She is still receiving death threats and is at risk of being detained and tortured.
On January 18th, 2012 the Sudanese security detained Amira Abd Allah and tortured her physically and psychologically. Amira was arrested a few weeks prior that date, in December last month, and ordered to report daily to the security political division until she was rearrested in January 2013. She is now receiving death threats and fears being rearrested and tortured.
Arry Organization is very concerned about the 2 WHRDs Awatif Awad and Amira Abd Allah, as they are at risk of torture and are living in danger of detention. Arry organization calls on the Sudanese government to stop harassing and threating Awatif and Amira and to investigate the violations and torture they faced in the security detentions.
Please help spread the word about these atrocities and write to the president of Sudan and his government to stop all violent acts, including physical and mental torture of activists, and their abrupt detention. Please help us bring an end to these atrocities by supporting the work of our brave friends and human rights lawyers in Sudan, who also risk their lives by speaking up against this act of injustice!
