Women in Mwanza have hailed the Population Services International (PSI) for its initiatives to introduce cervical cancer and cryotherapy screening services in order to reduce maternal mortality in the region.
Speaking to the 'Daily News' during the International Women's Day celebrations at Nyamagana ground, Rafiki and Igoma health centres, Veronica Magoti, a resident from Kabuholo in Mwanza said PSI has brought the services at a convenient time, as many women were suffering from the disease.
"We are used to hearing of such kind of services being available in Dar es Salaam and some few places in our country, but in Lake Zone we did not have this kind of service," said Veronica.
She said that cervical cancer and cryotherapy are dangerous before reiterating the need for women to know the early symptoms of the diseases and even to go to hospital for screening.
Flora Pius, a resident of Igoma in Mwanza Region said that the exercise was good, as one diagnosed with cervical cancer or cryotherapy is treated free of charge.
She added that what impressed the women is the doctors' team work that results in them getting treatment to everybody's satisfaction.
The PSI Head of Health Services, Dr Hadija Said, said that the turn up was excellent symbolizing high level of awareness in Mwanza Region, as women showed commitment to attend cervical cancer and cryotherapy screening at selected health centres.
Dr Said pointed out that the number of women who accessed cervical cancer and cryotherapy screening were 187 during the Women's Day celebrations at Buzuruga, Nyamagana ground and (Butimba), Rafiki and Igoma health centres.
