A global effort to improve health services and prevent the deaths of 16 million women and children is making progress according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The Every Woman, Every Child initiative aims to save lives through the improvement of health services in the world’s poorest countries.

World leaders are gathering in New York on Tuesday to discuss the initiative a year after it was launched.

Yves Bergevin, a maternal health expert at UNFPA, says over 50 countries have committed to improving child and maternal health.

“These commitments are adapted to each country whether it is increasing the age of marriage, addressing the issue of family planning or adolescent pregnancy, having an increased number of health workers to ensure every birth is safe or improving child health programmes, whether it’s immunization, malaria, prevention of diarrhoea etc.”
