At least 254 former Sabiny female genital surgeons in three districts of Kapchorwa, Kween and Bukwo have received grinding machines to start up a new way of life other than depending on mutilating women.
The machines were donated by Inter African Committee, Uganda, an NGOs based in Kapchorwa district. Mr. Geoffrey Sande, the committee's program coordinator, said that the machines were a way of attracting those still practicing female genital Mutilation (FGM), by serving as an alternative way of earning a living
ndeed, Ms Stima Chepto, a formerly popular female genital surgeon in Bukwo and now one of the initiative's beneficiaries attested to this saying: "We would have left circumcising women long time ago but we were not sure on how our daily income would be but now since we are supported it will be the end." Chepto now promised that they would work with the government to arrest those who are still going on with the practice.
Sande meanwhile further said that there would also be thermal generators installed to supply power to the trading centers without electricity for which these former surgeons would collect money monthly.
