The 47 county women's representatives have opposed a move to amend the constitution to scrap their positions. The MPs Cecilia Ng'etich (Bomet), Florence Waingah (Busia), Wanjiku Muhia (Nyandarua), Annah Nyokabi (Kiambu) and Mary Seneta (Kajiado) have urged the executive to deal end corruption in the national and county governmens in form of shoddy deals in the tendering of national projects.
Speaking at a press conference at Parliament Buildings in Nairobi yesterday, Ainamoi MP David Lang'at has hinted of Bill to scrap all the special and nominated seats to reduce the current public wage bill that has drawn public debate.
The Women MPs positions are some of the special positions created under the constitution and Lang'at said that if the bill goes through it will be a big win for the government to control the wage bill.
"Anyone suggesting otherwise is disrespecting the constitution and will be a bid setback to the women and the achievements gained through our women leaders," said Ng'etich who is the group's chairlady.
Muhia said that ghost workers in the civil service and the duplication of roles in the national government and the county governments must be addressed if the proposed austerity measures must be realized.
"We all agree that the wage bill is a national issue and we are ready to work with all stakeholders in a harmonious manner to find a lasting solution," Muhia said.
