Special Programmes minister Esther Murugi has called on Kenyanwomen to unite and form a strong political party. Speaking during a one-day voter education workshop at Nyeri CDF hall, Murugi said most people in the country are women who could form a political party to clinch many seats in the next general election. "All women should form one political party as a sign of unity in order to show men that we can do better than them. Women need a party that will take care of their families. Let us look at the party that will protect all the mothers," said the minister. She said statistics shows that 65 per cent of homes are headed by women and therefore they would make good leaders.
More than 50 participants attended the workshop sponsored by the Kenya Women ParliamentaryAssociation. "We have so many political parties which are not helpful. About 75per cent of the political parties are from Central Kenya.In Nyeri county, We have about 10 political parties," she noted. Murugi, who is the Nyeri Town MP, said women must remain united if they want to win the next general election. She is also pushing for a December general election saying the IEBC has enough time to prepare for it. "We introduced a Constitutional Amendment Bill last year which supports elections to be held in December," Murugi said.
The minister urged presidential hopefuls in the PNU Alliance to shelve their pride and support one candidate. "We need to come together for the common good. If we do not unite, we are going to be beaten in the elections. If we continue with this trend, we are not going anywhere," she said. The participants were learning about the Elections Act 2011 and the Constitution Amendment Bill 2011. The workshop was aimed to create awareness on laws and processes guiding election and to create awareness on the devolution and functions of the development of the devolved government.
