The women's lobby in Luangwa District has expressed happiness at the higher participation of women in this year's elections in Feira Constituency.Luangwa District women's lobby coordinator, Naomi Namula her organisation was impressed become more women had stepped forward to contest the elections.
Ms Namula said seven women from different political parties were contesting the local government polls in the 15 wards in Feira Constituency of Luangwa District.
She urged the women to take advantage of the enabling environment for anyone to vie for decision-making positions as that would enable them to express their views in the governance of the country.
Meanwhile, five political parties have fielded candidates for parliamentary elections for the September 20, 2011 elections.
Luangwa district returning officer, Willard Siampondo said the five candidates were James Gutinyu from the Patriotic Front (PF), United Party for National Development (UPND)'s Francis Ndhlovu, Patrick Ngoma Patrick for MMD, UNIP's Wilfred Nysenda, and Jailos Tembo from Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD).
Mr Siampondo said MMD and PF had managed to field candidates in all the 15 wards in Feira Constituency while UPND managed in 12 wards.The FDD and UNIP managed to field in only two wards and one ward, respectively.
