Kitwe GOVERNMENT has released K220,000 for the empowerment of 20 women's clubs in Kitwe, district commissioner Chanda Kabwe has said.
Mr Kabwe said in an interview yesterday that the funds will soon be disbursed to the women groups in the district to help them embark on income generating activities of their choice.
"As a district, we are happy that Government has given us K220, 000 for the empowerment of women groups. The money is in the coffers, we shall soon start disbursing it to the beneficiaries," he said.
Mr Kabwe said Government is committed to ensuring that women in the district are empowered to embark on various business ventures that could better their livelihoods.
He said women clubs are a good vehicle for reducing household poverty because of the important role that women play in providing for families
Mr Kabwe said women ought to be equal partners in the developmental arena and this is the reason why President Lungu has been appointing females in key positions.
He noted that Kitwe has many women groups who have embarked on productive business ventures such as poultry farming, production of peanut butter and livestock farming.
Mr Kabwe said Government will continue implementing community-based programmes aimed at alleviating poverty.
